Thank you. I don’t have the stomach for political conversations…but love my friends who see things differently. I’ve been working out what it means to put not your trust in princes or horses…I know of several poets/writers who seem to be caught up in the political, spouting the narrative and running to Blue Sky. It’s disappointing. I want to say don’t you see what was going on the last four years as far as the first amendment? I guess not.
I very much took the First Amendment for granted until I started grad school in 2014. It was the first time I encountered fellow artists (or really anyone, for that matter) openly calling for curtailments on our most fundamental right, in order to quash "hate speech", which is a term that can never be defined. It was a huge wakeup call for me, and I'm glad it happened more or less at its cultural inception (if Jonathan Haidt et al are accurate). It's made the last ten years anguishing but comprehensible: everything—**everything**—that we have seen is based in emotionalism. And as I always told my children as they were growing up: "You have to tell your feelings the truth", and not the other way around.
I would agree how everything is based on emotionalism. We so can’t take the First Amendment for granted. Thank you for your good work and for speaking out. Berliners is in my book stack.
Incredible insights as always! Have you seen the yard signs “Presidents come and go- but Wu-Tang is forever” ? It always makes me laugh and I appreciate that people can still have a sense of humor. Maybe we need to get around each other and laugh more to put politics in its place.
Thank you so much for this insightful post, Vesper.
I appreciate that, Erin! Your comment is better than a pitchfork and torch, ha! Who knows what to expect these days. :)
Beautiful! I want to read this to my art students🥰
Thank you!!!
